Clunking Noise Over Bumps: What's Wrong?

You drop off the curb of the Springfield Fred Meyer parking lot and hear "clunk" from the front left. You cross the railroad tracks on South A Street and both sides clunk together. You roll into your driveway on a speed bump and it sounds like something's loose underneath. Clunking over bumps is the single most common suspension complaint that walks into our bay, and the good news is, the usual cause is one of the cheaper repairs on the car. Here's how we walk through the diagnosis, and how to tell the cheap version from the urgent one.

Quick answer: three parts cause 90% of the clunks

Over the bumps, the suspension flexes, and any loose joint or worn bushing gives up a metallic "clunk" as slack takes up. On most cars we see, it's one of three things. A worn sway bar end link. A worn ball joint. A failed strut mount. The sway bar link is the cheapest and by far the most common. Ball joint is the most urgent (safety). Strut mount is the high-mileage middle ground. Below we cover all three, plus control arm bushings and the self-tests you can do at the curb before you drive to us.

Cause 1: Sway bar end link (most common, cheapest)

Sway bar end links are small, straight metal parts with a ball joint on each end. They tie the anti-roll bar to the control arm on each side. When the boots crack, water gets in, the ball stud rusts, and the joint loses its fit. The result: slack takes up over every bump with a sharp "clack" or "rattle."

In our shop, Subaru Outbacks and Foresters eat sway bar end links around 80,000 to 100,000 miles. The symmetric-AWD weight distribution plus the softer bushings Subaru spec'd on those years, plus Eugene's chip-seal and pothole density, shortens link life considerably versus the same car in a dry climate. We replace more Subaru end links than any other suspension part on the lot.

This is the cheapest of the four repairs on this page, and doing both sides at the same visit costs less than two separate visits because the labor overlaps. Easy DIY job if you own a swivel and a box wrench, but getting the rusted ball stud out without shredding the boot sometimes takes a cutoff wheel.

In Jeep Wranglers and older Ford Broncos, clunking over bumps is less often end links and more often the track bar mount or body bushings. Context matters for diagnosis.

Cause 2: Ball joint (safety-critical, more serious)

A worn ball joint clunks for the same reason: slack in a ball-and-socket that should be tight. But unlike a sway bar link, a failed ball joint can drop a wheel out from under the car. This is the one we treat as urgent. See our full bad ball joint symptoms guide for the failure mode.

We confirm ball joints with a pry-bar-on-the-lower-control-arm test. Wheel off the ground, bar between the arm and the knuckle. Any movement is a replace. Older Ford F-150s and GM Tahoes from the 2000s are the usual suspects in our shop. Lower joints fail first on those trucks.

Ball joints are quoted per side, and the price swings a lot by vehicle: trucks and SUVs with pressed-in joints cost more than cars with bolt-on joints. An alignment afterward is not optional, and we bundle it into the quote rather than surprising you with it at pickup.

If the clunk is accompanied by uneven inner tire wear or a vague feel in the steering, ball joint moves up the diagnostic list.

Cause 3: Strut mount or bearing (high mileage)

The strut mount sits at the top of the strut and bolts to the body of the car. Inside the mount is a bearing that lets the strut rotate when you turn the wheel. When the rubber cracks or the bearing loses its grease, you get a clunk on compression, a creak on turns, and sometimes a popping sound.

Mount wear shows up at 80,000 miles and up on most cars. Subaru Foresters and Outbacks run through mounts faster than any other brand we work on. If you're there for a strut replacement, we always include the mount and the boot. The added part cost is small. Coming back at 60,000 miles for a creaking mount costs more in labor than skipping the part saved you on the first trip, because the strut has to come apart all over again.

Mount-only replacement is quoted per side and is more expensive than it sounds for a small part, since the strut still has to come out to reach it. That's exactly why it makes sense to do it with the strut.

Cause 4: Control arm bushing

Control arm bushings are rubber pucks that let the control arm pivot. When the rubber cracks or the bond fails, the arm moves slightly on its mount. You'll feel it as a clunk under braking or over sharp bumps, and sometimes a shudder in hard corners.

On most cars, bushing replacement means control arm replacement. Pressing out the old bushings and pressing in new ones requires a shop press and special tooling, and by the time you pay for that labor a complete arm often costs about the same. So we usually quote the full arm, per side, with the alignment included.

Common on higher-mileage Toyota Camrys, Honda Civics, and anything over 150,000 miles that has spent its life outdoors in Willamette Valley rain. Rubber does not fail here from road salt, since ODOT does not salt the Eugene-Springfield metro. It fails from years of never really drying out.

How to self-diagnose in the driveway

Before you drive to us, you can narrow it down with two tests.

The bounce test. Park on flat ground. Push down hard on the front corner three times. Let go. Count rebounds. One soft rebound, healthy. Two or more, strut is gone. A blown strut gives a different feel than a sway bar link (boaty and rolling instead of clunky). Bad strut bounces. Bad sway bar link clunks.

Wheel wiggle. Lift the front wheel safely (jack and stand, or at a shop). Grab at 3 and 9 o'clock, push-pull. Movement here is tie rod or rack. Grab at 12 and 6, same test. Movement here is ball joint or wheel bearing. If you have help, one person rocks the wheel while the other watches each joint from below. Any visible movement at the joint is a replace.

If neither test shows anything and you still hear a clunk, it's likely a sway bar end link, which shows up only under lateral body roll. Those we confirm on the lift with a pry bar.

Two things move a quote inside those bands: how rusted the fasteners are, and whether an alignment is part of the job. Labor also overlaps when multiple parts get done at the same visit, which is why doing both sides together beats two trips.
