On systems like Honda's Maintenance Minder, the percentage is a real calculation fed by engine temperature, load, RPM and trip length. When it reads 15 percent, that is not a guess and it is not a timer.
Condensation that never boiled off. It is the signature of short-trip driving, and it turns up constantly on cars that shuttle between Thurston and Gateway and never get properly hot.
Dark alone is normal on a diesel and on plenty of modern gasoline engines. Dark and watery, or carrying a fuel smell, means the oil is diluted and no longer doing its job.
Often a filter with a weak anti-drainback valve letting the filter empty overnight. It sounds like nothing. Repeat it every morning for a few years and it becomes cam journal wear.
Consumption and a leak are different conversations with different fixes. If the drop is meaningful, it is worth pairing with engine diagnostics rather than just topping up.
Modern engines use oil pressure to move cam phasers. Put 5W-30 into an engine designed around 0W-20 and the timing actuators respond to it. People spend real effort chasing that light before anyone thinks to look at the oil weight on the last invoice.
Estimate firstConventional is still correct for older, naturally aspirated engines where the manufacturer called for it, and we are not going to talk you off it. Synthetic blend suits a lot of mid-2000s through mid-2010s vehicles and flows better on mornings the valley drops near freezing. Full synthetic is required rather than optional on most 2014-and-newer vehicles and on essentially every turbocharged engine, because oil at the turbo center housing sees temperatures conventional oil cannot survive. It cokes, the feed line restricts, and that failure stays silent until it is not.
A 0W-20 engine gets 0W-20. Grade goes on the invoice.
The media is not the part that matters most. The anti-drainback valve keeps oil in the filter when the engine is off so you have pressure at startup. The bypass valve opens at a set pressure differential so the engine still gets oil if the media clogs or the oil is cold. Both are engineered around your specific engine. Subaru filter designs place the bypass differently from most, and Subaru turns up in this valley at more than twice its national share, so that detail comes up here more than it would elsewhere.
This is the part of an oil change that is actually worth something, and it happens while the car is already in the air. Tread depth read with a gauge at several points across each tire. Pad thickness in millimeters front and rear, with the manufacturer minimum beside it. Fluid level and condition on brake fluid, coolant, transmission and differential, with coolant checked for freeze point rather than just level. Battery load tested, because a battery can read 12.6 volts at rest and still collapse under crank load. Hoses squeezed by hand for soft spots. CV boots checked for tears and grease slinging. Steering and suspension play at all four corners. Wipers, which in a place this wet count as a safety item.

Spark plugs, transmission and differential fluids, coolant, brake fluid, and the steps that step up at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Brake fluid deserves singling out. It absorbs moisture from the air, which drops its boiling point and softens the pedal, and that matters most on a long descent off Willamette Pass.
We ask what the car does. Commute length, whether you tow, whether it sits for days. A car doing four-mile runs to Gateway and back needs a different interval from one running I-5 to Portland twice a month, and the manufacturer schedule says so.
We check the schedule for your exact vehicle. Engine, model year, oil spec, and whether the normal or severe-service column applies. Severe service does not mean desert racing. It means short trips, extended idling, stop-start traffic, towing and sustained grades. Read that against how people actually drive here and a lot of ordinary Springfield commuting qualifies.
We look at the underside before we drain it. The car is in the air, the underbody is visible, and that is the moment to catch a torn CV boot or a hose going soft months before it strands you on OR-58.
Measurement, not impression. "Front pads at 5mm, replace around 3mm" is information you can act on. "Brakes are getting low" is a sales tactic. Every marginal item on your sheet carries the reading and the threshold next to it.
Drain, replace, refill to spec. Correct oil, correct filter, correct capacity, gasket seated and old gasket confirmed off. Level checked after the engine has run and settled.
We tell similar findings apart before recommending anything. Inner-edge tire wear is a wheel alignment conversation, and replacing the tire without fixing the angle buys the same wear again. Grease inside a wheel is a drivetrain repair finding. Play at three and nine is a tie rod. A slow coolant loss with no visible leak gets tested, which is where cooling system repair starts.
Anything inside tolerance is reported as fine. That happens often, and the sheet says so instead of inventing a red dot.
Oil changes look like a commodity, which is exactly why the numbers vary so much between shops. Two invoices for the same car can describe genuinely different jobs. What moves the number:
Conventional, synthetic blend and full synthetic are three different products at three different levels. This is not a choice you get to make on most modern vehicles. A 2019 turbo four requires full synthetic, and running anything else shortens engine life rather than saving money.
Capacity ranges from around four quarts on a small four-cylinder to eight or more on a V8 or a diesel. Oil is sold by volume, so capacity moves the parts side of the invoice directly and predictably.
A spin-on canister and a cartridge filter in a housing are different parts and different labor. Some cartridge housings need a specific socket and a torque spec, and some sit where the intake has to come off first. OEM filters cost more than the cheapest option on the shelf, and on engines with unusual bypass design that difference is worth paying.
Aluminum pans stripped by an overtightened plug are common on cars that have been through quick-lube chains. Repairing the threads properly is a real job. So is replacing a crush washer that should have been replaced every service and was not.
Severe service does not raise the price of one oil change. It raises how many you need per year, which is the number people actually care about. Short-trip Thurston commuting, stop-start on Main Street, and towing over OR-58 all put you on the shorter column.
The inspection is included. Acting on it is separate and it is your call. A car arriving with pads at 3mm and a leaking CV boot has a bigger invoice than one arriving sound, and that is a difference in the car, not in the shop.
An oil change at 60,000 miles usually lands next to a longer list: spark plugs, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, cabin and engine air filters. Bundling those into one visit costs less in total labor than four separate appointments.
Diesel oil capacities are larger, the specification is stricter, and the filter arrangement is often more involved. A diesel repair service is a different job with a different parts list.

Maintenance rarely presents as an emergency, which is exactly why the decision gets made badly. The useful question is not "can this wait" but "what does waiting actually cost".

The one to argue with is the 3,000-mile sticker. Following your manufacturer's real interval, whether that is 5,000 or 10,000, is not cutting corners. It is what the engine was designed around. The saving comes from doing the right number of services, not the maximum number.
A good estimate names the oil grade and whether it is conventional, blend or full synthetic. It states the capacity in quarts. It gives the filter part number. It separates the inspection from the service so you can see the inspection is not a sales event with a fee attached. And it lists any recommended work as a separate line you can approve or decline individually.
Ask any shop:
A vague quote is one where the recommendation arrives without a number attached. "Brakes are getting low" and "your fluid looks dirty" are not findings, they are prompts. The other pattern worth noticing is a shop that recommends the same four items to every car that comes through. If your invoice looks like a menu rather than a diagnosis, ask for the measurements before you approve anything.

The 3,000-mile rule applies to older engines running conventional oil and to almost nothing built in the last fifteen years.

That is textbook severe service under most manufacturer schedules and it usually means shortening the interval. Plenty of Thurston and Gateway commuting falls into that category.
No. Oregon DEQ emissions testing applies to the Portland metro and the Medford-Ashland area. Lane County has no testing requirement and there is no DEQ station in Eugene or Springfield, so nothing in your maintenance schedule here is set by a test deadline.
Severe service covers short trips, extended idling, stop-start traffic, towing and sustained grades. It usually shortens oil, transmission and coolant intervals. Given short local commutes, valley traffic and anyone towing over OR-58 or the Santiam, plenty of vehicles here qualify even though their owners think of their driving as entirely ordinary.
Yes, and it happens often. If every measurement is inside tolerance, the sheet says so. When something is marginal you get the number and the threshold rather than a color, so you decide whether to do it now or watch it next visit.
If the vehicle is near the end of its interval, yes. Sustained climbing at high load and low airflow is the hardest thing most engines around here ever do, and it is what breaks oil down thermally. It also exposes a marginal cooling system, so cooling system repair items are worth checking at the same visit.
