Every shift arrives a beat later than it used to, yet the pattern repeats the same way on every drive. That consistency matters. Predictable softness usually points at fluid that has lost its friction properties, not a hard part failing inside. Not urgent this week, worth booking this month.
You feel it on the flat stretch of OR-126 heading toward Eugene, somewhere in the mid-40s, a fine vibration like driving over rumble strips that vanishes when you touch the gas. That is often torque converter clutch shudder from tired fluid. It is one of the more fixable items on this page, and it gets worse the longer it runs.
Healthy automatic fluid is red or amber and smells faintly sweet. Brown fluid that smells burnt has been running hot, and heat is what kills transmissions. Bring it in for a pan inspection before deciding anything. The pan tells the rest of the story.
Engine RPM climbs, road speed does not follow. Drivers usually notice this first on a grade, pulling up OR-58 toward Willamette Pass or merging onto I-5 at Glenwood with the throttle down. Slipping points inside the unit. Stop towing, book a diagnosis, and expect a specialist referral.
Gradual change is wear. Sudden change is usually a fault. A transmission that banged into gear yesterday and was fine last week frequently has a solenoid, sensor or connector problem, and those live outside the case where we can reach them.
A light gray paste on the magnet is normal wear and we expect it. Bronze-colored material from a bushing, or chunks of friction lining, is hard-part damage. That finding ends the fluid conversation immediately and starts a different one.
of things get blamed on the gearbox that are not the gearbox. A failing CV joint, a dragging bearing or a misfire under load all imitate one, and those get separated under engine diagnostics or drivetrain repair before anyone touches the transmission.
Estimate firstMost automatics release only part of their total capacity through the pan, because a meaningful share stays in the torque converter and the cooler lines. On many Toyota and Honda units we run a staged drain and fill, driving the vehicle between rounds so fresh fluid circulates properly, instead of force-flushing a high-mileage unit under pressure.
Where a serviceable filter exists behind the pan, dropping it gives information available no other way. The magnet holds the evidence, the filter shows what has been circulating, and the gasket surface shows whether a leak started here or somewhere above.
This is the one that gets vehicles killed. Subaru Lineartronic, Honda's dedicated CVT fluid and the JATCO-built Nissan units each specify their own fluid, and successive generations are not interchangeable even within one brand. There is no universal CVT fluid, whatever the label on a jug at a parts counter suggests. The wrong fluid lets the belt slip against the pulley faces, and that damage does not reverse.
Pan gaskets, axle seals, output shaft seals and the cooler line fittings. These sit outside the case, they are repairable in a normal bay, and catching one early keeps a slow drip from becoming a low-fluid failure on the climb over the Santiam.
Steel cooler lines run under the vehicle where sustained moisture does its work. With more than 40 inches of rain a year and wet weather holding from October into June, corrosion here comes from constant damp rather than anything on the road surface. ODOT does not treat this metro; the state salt route runs the Siskiyou Pass down to Canyonville. Worn mounts also cause clunks that get misread as shift problems, so we check those too. Cooler flow ties into cooling system repair more often than drivers expect.
Shift solenoids, range sensors, speed sensors, wiring and connectors at the case. A code names a circuit, not a broken part, and in a climate this wet, connector corrosion at the transmission is a genuine failure mode. Where the fault turns out to live further back in the loom it moves across to electrical and battery repair.
Modern transmissions learn. They adapt shift pressure and timing to compensate for clutch wear, and those learned values need clearing after a fluid service so the unit relearns against the new fluid. Skip it and a good service can still shift badly for weeks.
Not on the list: internal rebuilds, torque converter replacement, hard-part work. That needs a dedicated bench, specialty tooling and clean-room discipline that only pays off in a shop doing it daily. A half-good rebuild is worse than none.
We talk through the symptom first. When it happens, at what speed, hot or cold, loaded or empty. A shudder that only appears towing up OR-58 is a different problem from one that shows up crawling past Gateway Mall at 5pm.
Fluid condition and smell. Color against a white shop rag, smell, and whether it strings or drips. Cheapest evidence available, and it steers everything after it.
Pan comes down where the design allows. We photograph the magnet and the pan floor. Gray paste, expected. Bronze or friction chunks, and we stop and call rather than continue into a service that cannot help.
Scan tool live data, not just stored codes. Commanded gear against actual gear, solenoid duty cycles, input and output shaft speeds, and slip calculated between them. That separates a lazy solenoid from a slipping clutch pack.
Transmission temperature gets measured, not guessed. Many units have no dipstick, and the correct level is only valid inside a specific temperature window read through the scan tool. Overfilled fluid aerates and cannot hold pressure. Underfilled starves the pump on hard cornering.
Fluid specification confirmed against the vehicle, not the category. On a CVT this step is not paperwork. We identify the exact unit and the exact fluid it calls for before anything is opened, and the name of that fluid goes on your paperwork.
Road test under load. A flat run and a graded pull, because a unit that behaves on the way to PeaceHealth RiverBend can be past its design temperature climbing toward Willamette Pass. We watch shift timing, lockup behavior and line pressure.

We would rather answer "how much" by showing you what actually moves the number, because two vehicles with the same complaint can land in genuinely different places. Once we have seen your fluid and read live data, you get a written figure. Until then, these are the variables that decide it.
Fluid is not a commodity here. A conventional automatic running a widely available specification sits at one end. A brand-specific CVT fluid sits at the other. We use what your unit calls for and we tell you which one went in.
Capacities vary widely between a compact automatic and a full-size truck unit, and a staged drain and fill uses more fluid than a single drain by design. Volume alone can separate two otherwise identical jobs.
Some transmissions have a filter behind the pan. Others are sealed with a lifetime filter that is not intended to be replaced. A serviceable filter adds a part and adds labor, and it also buys you the pan inspection.
A drain plug means a clean drain and a quick job. No drain plug means dropping the whole pan to empty it, which brings a gasket, more time and more mess. Some integrated pan-and-filter assemblies replace as one piece.
CVT service demands the exact specified fluid and a strict level procedure with less tolerance for error. That combination of fluid and required care sits above a routine automatic service in both time and materials.
A shudder caught early is usually a fluid job. The same shudder driven on for another year can involve a converter, and that is a different scope entirely. Time is the one factor entirely in your hands.
Solenoids, sensors, wiring, seals and cooler lines are external and we handle them here. Clutch packs, pumps and hard parts are internal and go to a specialist. That distinction changes the job more than anything else on this list.
A pan gasket is straightforward. A corroded steel cooler line means fabrication or a replacement line, plus flushing the cooler circuit so debris does not come straight back.
Every job gets a written estimate before work starts, itemized by part, fluid specification and labor. If what we find under the pan changes the picture, we stop and call you before spending anything further.
Fluid service fixes fluid problems. It does not fix mechanical damage, and on a high-mileage unit that is already slipping, fresh fluid occasionally makes things worse because worn friction material and varnish were part of what was still gripping. That is an uncomfortable thing to tell someone. We tell them anyway.

If the honest answer is that spending money on a service changes nothing, that is what we will say. It costs us the job. It saves you the invoice.
A good estimate is boring to read and easy to check. It names the fluid specification going in, not just "transmission fluid." It lists the filter or pan assembly as a separate line. It shows labor hours separately from parts. It states whether an adaptation reset is included. And it tells you what happens if the pan reveals something worse, because that conversation should be agreed before the vehicle goes up, not after.

Vague quotes signal vague work. A single flat figure with no breakdown, a shop that cannot name the fluid, or a recommendation for a pressure flush on a high-mileage unit without inspecting anything first are all worth a pause. So is any estimate that grows after the work has begun without a phone call.

That commute is short, repetitive and heavily stop-start, which is harder on fluid than the mileage suggests. Watch the interval by time rather than distance, and pair the check with routine oil change and maintenance so nothing gets forgotten.
Fluid expands as it heats, and many modern units have no dipstick, so the factory procedure defines a temperature window in which the reading is valid. We read that temperature with a scan tool. Get it wrong and the unit runs over or underfilled, which mimics a failing transmission convincingly.
