Hit a Pothole and Now the Car Pulls? Here Is What Changed

A pull that starts the moment you hit a pothole means the impact moved something. Most often it is toe alignment knocked out at one front wheel, a bent rim losing air unevenly, or a strut that took the hit and lost its damping. All three are fixable. Two of them get expensive if you keep driving.
Springfield gives you plenty of chances. The freeze-thaw cycle through a wet valley winter opens seams in the older asphalt along Main Street, and the patched sections of OR-126 and the I-5 on-ramps at Glenwood break up fast once water gets under them.
First: what a pothole actually does to the front end
A wheel dropping into a hole and slamming the far edge sends a load straight up through the tire, wheel, and strut into the body. The energy has to go somewhere. It goes into whatever component yields first.
Order of failure, roughly by how commonly we see it:
- Alignment shift. Toe and camber move at the struck corner. No part is broken, but the geometry is wrong. Car pulls, steering wheel sits off center, tire starts scrubbing.
- Bent rim. The inner lip deforms where it hit. Often invisible from outside the wheel. Causes a slow leak, a vibration, or both.
- Tire sidewall damage. A bulge on the sidewall means the internal cords broke. That tire is done, no matter how good the tread looks.
- Blown strut or shock. The valving inside gets damaged or the seal lets go. Ride goes floaty and bouncy.
- Bent control arm or knuckle. Heavy impact only. Camber goes visibly off and the tire looks tilted.
- Broken coil spring. Usually a spring already corroded. Corner sits low.
The pull tells you where to look
Pull that is steady and constant at highway speed on level pavement points to alignment or a dragging brake. Find a flat, straight stretch, keep it steady, and briefly ease your grip. If it drifts the same direction every time, it is geometry.
Pull that comes with a vibration rising with speed points at the wheel itself. Bent rim, thrown balance weight, or a tire that shifted a belt.
Pull that appears only under braking is a caliper or a rotor, not the pothole, unless the impact damaged a flex hose.
Wandering rather than pulling, where the car needs constant small corrections on I-5, usually means toe is out on both sides or something in the steering linkage has play in it.
Check your steering wheel position too. If the wheel is now sitting 10 degrees off center while the car tracks straight, the alignment moved even if you feel no pull.
The bounce test takes 30 seconds
Park on level ground. Push down hard on one corner of the bumper, three times, then let go on the down stroke.
A healthy strut brings the corner back up and settles. One rebound, done. If the corner keeps oscillating, two or three bounces before it settles, the damping in that strut is gone.
Do all four corners and compare. A difference between the front left and front right after a pothole strike is the strongest evidence you will get in a parking lot. Also look behind the wheel for a wet, oily film running down the strut body. That is the seal leaking, and a leaking strut is a failed strut.
Read the tires a few weeks later
Bad alignment writes itself onto the tread, and the pattern names the cause.
Inside edge worn smooth, outer tread fine. Toe out or excessive negative camber. Very common after an impact, and it can destroy a tire in a few thousand miles while the rest of the tread still looks new.
Outside edge worn. Toe in, or a positive camber shift.
Cupping, scalloped dips around the tread. The tire is bouncing rather than staying planted. That is a damping problem, which means struts or shocks, not alignment. An alignment alone will not fix cupping.
Feathering, where tread blocks are sharp on one side and rounded on the other so it feels smooth one way and rough the other when you run a hand across it. Classic toe misalignment.
Both shoulders worn, center fine. Underinflation. Check pressure before blaming the pothole. Valley temperatures swinging from 30 to 70 degrees move tire pressure noticeably, and a cold October morning can drop you several PSI overnight.
Run your palm across each front tire. Feathering is something you feel before you can see it, and it is the single most useful thing a driver can check without tools.
What we do on the lift
Alignment starts with inspection, not the alignment rack. Setting angles on worn parts is wasted work, because a control arm bushing with play in it will not hold the setting.
So the sequence is: wheels off, check each rim for runout, inspect tires for sidewall bulges and belt separation, then a hands-on check of ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, and sway bar links for movement. Struts get checked for leakage and for a bent shaft. Only then do the alignment angles get measured and set against the manufacturer's spec, front and rear.
If a bent knuckle or control arm turns up, no amount of adjustment will bring the angles back into range. The rack will simply refuse to reach spec, which is itself the diagnosis. More on the process is on our steering and suspension repair page.
About claims
Lane County and the city both have processes for damage claims on public roads, and outcomes vary. What helps is documentation gathered the same day: photos of the hole with something for scale, the location, the date and time, and the repair estimate. If you are going that route, gather it before the pothole gets patched.

Yes, and it takes less force than people expect. A firm sidewall impact can shift toe by a fraction of a degree, which is enough to produce a steady pull and visible inner-edge tire wear within a few thousand miles. The car does not need to be visibly damaged.
Alignment produces a pull that is steady at all speeds. A bent wheel produces a vibration that grows with speed and often a slow air leak. If you get both a pull and a shake, assume both and have the wheel checked for runout on the lift.
Short local trips at moderate speed are usually acceptable if the steering feels solid and there is no vibration. Stop driving if you see a sidewall bulge, feel the car wander, or hear clunking over bumps. Any of those can mean a part is on its way to failing.
The strut on the struck corner probably lost its damping. Do the bounce test on each corner and compare. A corner that oscillates more than once, or shows an oily film down the strut body, has a failed unit that needs replacing in pairs across the axle.
Yes. Removing a strut disturbs camber and often toe at that corner, so the geometry has to be reset afterward. Any shop that replaces a strut and skips the alignment is handing you a tire wear problem a few months out.
