Quick answer

A car that pulls to one side usually comes down to four things: a tire problem, an alignment that drifted out of spec, a dragging brake caliper, or a worn suspension joint. Road crown is the sneaky fifth, and on stretches of 99 around Junction City it will pull a perfectly aligned car a hair to the right. The fastest way to narrow it down is to pull only when you brake, only when you cruise, or in both situations.

At our Springfield shop we see this complaint walk in two or three times a week, usually on Subarus and Civics with 80k plus miles. Good news: most of the time the fix is not exotic and not a fortune.

Cause 1: Alignment out of spec

Alignment is the angles at which your wheels meet the ground. Camber, caster, toe. When one of those drifts past factory tolerance, the car tracks toward the side with the looser setting. Hitting a curb coming off Coburg Road, a deep pothole near the 6th and 7th couplet downtown, or just the slow drift that happens over time, any of those will do it.

Tell: the pull is steady at all speeds, gets slightly worse on smooth pavement, and the steering wheel sits off center when you drive straight.

We print the before and after sheet on every wheel alignment so you see exactly which angle was out. If the printout shows a number in red both before and after, you have a bent part and an alignment alone will not hold.

Cause 2: Tire pressure mismatch

This is the cheapest cause and the one most people skip. A tire 8 psi lower than its partner on the same axle will pull the car that direction every time. The Willamette Valley has big temperature swings in October and March, and a tire that was 35 psi on an 80 degree August afternoon can read 29 psi on a 38 degree morning.

Before you pay anyone for a diagnosis, do this. Buy a tire gauge at Bi-Mart or Jerry's, check all four tires cold, and set them to the number on the door jamb sticker (not the sidewall). If the pull disappears, the gauge just paid for itself several times over.

Cause 3: Defective tire pull (radial pull)

Sometimes a tire is built with an internal belt shift. Looks normal. Measures normal. Still pulls. The way to prove this one is a tire swap test: move the front tires side for side (driver to passenger, passenger to driver), drive, and see if the pull changed direction. If it did, you have a bad tire, not an alignment issue.

New tires can do this out of the box. So can tires with 20k miles on them. We see it most often on the cheap tire brands that get installed at warehouse stores.

Cause 4: Brake drag (stuck caliper)

Here is the one people get wrong. If your car drives straight until you press the brake and then yanks hard to one side, your alignment is fine. You have a caliper dragging or seizing on one side.

Quick self-check: drive a short loop, park, and carefully feel each front wheel with the back of your hand. Warm is normal after driving. Hot enough you cannot hold your hand on the rim for three seconds means that caliper is stuck. In the Pacific Northwest rain nine months a year, caliper slide pins corrode and seize. It is the most common cause of brake-only pull we see on cars over 100k, especially Foresters and Tacomas that sit outside.

Caliper service is quoted per side, and the swing comes down to one question: can the caliper be cleaned and rebuilt, or does it need replacing? A seized piston means replacement. Dry slide pins usually do not. Pair either with fresh pads and a fluid flush and the pull goes away. See brake repair for the full scope.

Cause 5: Worn suspension (ball joint, tie rod, control arm bushing)

A worn ball joint or a sloppy tie rod end lets the wheel wander under load. The pull is usually subtle at first, gets worse when the road surface changes, and you will feel a little shimmy or clunk going over the expansion joints on I-5 heading north toward Coburg.

The way we confirm this is on the lift. Hand on the tire at 3 and 9, push and pull. Free play means the tie rod end. Hand at 12 and 6, same test, free play means the ball joint. Control arm bushing takes a pry bar and a good eye.

Tie rod ends and ball joints are both quoted per side, with ball joints the more expensive of the two, and both require an alignment afterward. Budget for that alignment as part of the job, not as an extra.

Cause 6: Road crown bias

Every road is built with a slight crown so water runs off. On I-5 south of Eugene and on 99W heading toward Junction City, that crown is pronounced enough that a car will drift right if you take your hands off the wheel for a second. This is not a defect, and an alignment will not cure it. Every car on the road does it.

The test: find a flat parking lot with no crown (the north end of the Valley River Center lot works), drive at 25 mph, and briefly let go of the wheel. If it tracks straight there, crown is your culprit on the highway.

Self-diagnose steps

Run these in order and you will know what you are dealing with before you call anyone.

  1. Check tire pressures cold. Set to door sticker spec.
  2. Drive the same road you always feel the pull on. Note: pull when cruising? Pull only under braking? Both?
  3. Cruising only, constant pull: alignment or tire.
  4. Braking only: caliper drag.
  5. Swap front tires side for side. Pull followed the tire = defective tire.
  6. Feel wheel temperatures after driving. Hot one side = caliper.
