How to Prepare Your Car for Willamette Pass

Willamette Pass on OR-58 climbs from the Willamette Valley floor to a 5,128-foot summit in about 70 miles, with 5% to 6% grades in the steepest sections. Before heading up, confirm your coolant, brakes, tires, and wipers are in shape, carry chains between November and April, and check ODOT TripCheck the morning of the drive. Most breakdowns we see happen on the descent, not the climb.
What OR-58 actually demands from a car
Highway 58 leaves Eugene through Pleasant Hill and Oakridge, then climbs steadily past Salt Creek Falls to the summit near Willamette Pass Ski Area. Summer looks easy and misleads people. The road bakes the cooling system on the long pull from Oakridge, dumps afternoon thunderstorms that hydroplane bald tires, and hands you a 15-mile descent toward Crescent Lake that cooks marginal brakes.
Winter is a different animal. Chains or traction tires are legally required during declared traction events, usually from mid-November through early April. Black ice at the summit is common even when the valley is dry. If you are headed to Bend for a weekend, assume the pass will be harder than the valley forecast suggests.
Chain law on OR-58, in plain English
ODOT runs a tiered system. Conditions Required means traction tires or chains. Chains Required means chains, even on AWD and 4WD. An AWD Outback with all-season tires is fine under "Conditions Required" but is still required to chain up under "Chains Required."
Studded tires are legal in Oregon from November 1 through March 31. After April 1, take them off or you are looking at a citation. Most Eugene shops, including ours, schedule seasonal swaps in October and April.
Check ODOT TripCheck the morning of your trip. The posted restriction at the summit can change in 30 minutes when a storm rolls in.
Brake demand on the downgrade
This is where cars get hurt. The Oakridge to Crescent descent puts sustained load on the brakes for 15 miles. Pads that had 4 mm in town feel fine locally but glaze, overheat, and lose bite before you reach the bottom.
Our rule of thumb before a pass run: if your pads are under 5 mm or your brake fluid has never been flushed, deal with both first. Burnt, moisture-saturated fluid boils under sustained braking and the pedal goes soft. Fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 with a dry boiling point north of 400 degrees handles the descent without issue. Use engine braking on the descent. Drop to D3 or manual mode, let the engine hold speed, and only tap the brakes to scrub off a few mph at a time. Riding the pedal the whole way is what overheats pads.
Coolant and the altitude tax
At 5,128 feet the air is thinner, your radiator rejects less heat, and a marginal cooling system that was fine on I-5 in July can overheat on the climb out of Oakridge. The parts that show up first:
Water pump. If there is a weep stain on the timing cover or the bearing has a faint growl, replace it before the trip. Subaru EJ and FA engines are famous for water pump seep around 100,000 miles.
Thermostat. A stuck-open stat means slow warmup. Stuck-closed is the one that strands you at the summit. If yours is original on a 10-year-old vehicle, replace it with the OEM temperature rating.
Radiator cap. A weak cap cannot hold system pressure. The boiling point drops and the overflow bottle vents coolant on the climb. It is one of the cheapest parts on the car and one of the most often ignored.
Coolant strength. 50/50 mix is the standard. If you topped off with straight water last summer, flush and refill. Our engine diagnostics and repair write-up covers what we check on a cooling system.
Tires: tread depth beats brand
M+S rating is the minimum legal traction tire. The three-peak mountain snowflake symbol is what ODOT actually wants to see in a serious declared traction event. All-season tires under 4/32" tread hydroplane through the wet stretches between Pleasant Hill and Lowell and will not meet the traction requirement at the summit.
Before a pass run:
- Check pressure cold. Add 3 psi over door-sticker spec if you are loaded with ski gear and passengers.
- Look at the wear indicators. If they are flush with the tread, you need tires, not a trip.
- Carry chains sized to your tires. Practice fitting them once at home before you need to do it in the dark at 20 degrees.
Studded snows are still the king on the summit ice, within the Nov 1 to Mar 31 window. Dedicated studless winters like the Blizzak WS90 or Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 are close behind and legal year-round.
Battery and cold starts
Lead-acid batteries lose roughly 30% of cold-cranking amps at 0 degrees Fahrenheit versus 80 degrees. A battery that starts your car fine in Springfield can crank weakly at the summit lodge parking lot overnight. If yours is over four years old, load-test it. What to carry in the car
Not a full overnight kit, but enough to survive if you get stuck for a few hours:
- Wool or fleece blanket for each passenger
- Snacks, 2 liters of water
- Collapsible shovel
- Flashlight, headlamp preferred
- Tire chains, gloves, knee pad for fitting them
- Fully charged phone battery or USB bank
- Ice scraper

Pre-trip inspection at the shop
Thirty minutes on the lift. We pull the wheels to measure brake pad thickness, test brake fluid moisture, check coolant strength with a refractometer, read battery cold-cranking amps, inspect tire tread and pressure, confirm wiper blade condition, and look over belts and hoses. You leave with a written checklist and a go or no-go for the trip.

Book the pre-trip check at least a week before your trip. That gives time to fix anything marginal before the forecast changes.
FAQ
No, not under a "Chains Required" designation. Oregon's top-tier traction rule requires chains on all vehicles regardless of drivetrain. AWD is enough under "Conditions Required" if tires are M+S or 3PMSF rated.
The sustained grades run 5% to 6% on both sides of the summit, with short 7% sections near Salt Creek Tunnel. The 15-mile descent toward Crescent Lake is the brake killer for most drivers.
If conditions permit, yes, with M+S rated tires, tread above 4/32", and chains in the trunk. Check ODOT TripCheck before leaving. On days with active chain requirements or whiteout conditions, wait it out. This is not Interstate 5.
